As I stand in awe of a sunrise, a sunset, a storm, or a beautiful day—I stand in awe of Him. Psalm 33:8 says, “let all the earth fear the Lord; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him” (NASB). Every morning I begin my day with confidence in His divine sovereignty and benevolence. I am at rest in His love. While I remain in awe of Him nothing else can gain my attention—especially not fear. I look forward to what the Lord has orchestrated for my day. His loving care and abundant provision never fail to amaze me. He is trustworthy, faithful, and always good.

A few nights ago out of curiosity and a desire to be well-informed about the world around me, I let my focus stray and my confidence in Him wane. The effect was almost immediate. I became fearful. I felt a sinking sensation both physically and emotionally. I even felt grieved in my spirit. It was like I had gone from being infused with light and strength to being exposed, like "Superman," to "kryptonite."* I had to make a conscious effort to return to my original stance:  standing in awe of Him. Why would I want to gaze on anything else when I can gaze on Him, who is light and life? As we live in this world and its troubles, we must remember and determine to stand firmly in awe of Him.  I love Webster’s* definitions of what it means to stand. Here are some of my favorites:

  1.  "To be in an upright position on the feet.
  2.  To rise on one’s feet...
  3.  To have a specified height when in this position...
  4.  To stop or remain motionless or steady on the feet.
  5.  To take a position or place...
  6.  To remain firm or steadfast as in a cause.
  7.  To take up or maintain a position or attitude with respect to a person, issue, or the like...
  8.  To have or adopt a certain policy, course, or attitude...
  9.  To be set, placed, fixed, located, or situated...
  10.  To remain erect or whole; resist change, decay or destruction...
  11.  To continue in force or remain valid...
  12.  To endure or undergo without harm or damage or without giving way."**

As we choose to “Stand in Awe” of Him, let’s remember who He is. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; He is the Alpha and the Omega; He was, He is, and He always will be God above all, forever and ever!!!

Stand In Awe

“Sing for joy in the Lord, O you righteous ones; praise is becoming to the upright…By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host…Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast. The Lord nullifies the counsel of the nations; He frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart from generation to generation. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance…Let Your loving kindness, O Lord, be upon us, according as we have hoped in You” (Psalm 33:1,6,8-12,22 NASB).
